Let’s Train Better Together

In over a decade of being a certified professional dog trainer, I’ve seen that there’s been one key to reaching your training goals and building a partnership with your dog - and that’s being consistent over time.

Let me help you find an efficient, clear way towards the life you want with your dog.

Our Coaching Community is here to help you and your dog throughout the process. Perfect for solving behavior problems, leash reactivity, tackling all the foundations for a new dog, and continually challenging your smart, energetic dog who thrives on more. Far beyond just a private session or an online course. It’s the best of all worlds.

I want to help you get out there with your dog

Let’s get out there! Whatever your ''out there” goal might be for you and your pup.

Maybe it’s being able to walk your reactive dog in your own neighborhood. A calm stroll on the beach or a forest trail. Grabbing coffee and running errands.

Or it’s a backpacking adventure in the Sierra, a road trip to see family or to join in on a climbing or camping adventure.

Getting out for all is it’s building your relationship with training games and challenges. Keep your dog’s brain exercised and building a bond by learning together.

Get out there with your dog and see the world together.

Coaching, Community and Individualized programs

to give you the skills to get out there with your dog

Dog training is more than what we do in our specific training sessions. Learning to communicate together opens up a partnership of cooperation and trust that lasts a lifetime.

There is so much to learn when starting out - behavior and learning theory, mechanics of luring, leash work and toy play, understanding what your dog is thinking, and how to help them really understand things is a lot!

Coaching with Heather is a platform to learn the pieces in a manageable way, at your and your dog’s pace.

I highly recommend Clear Mind Canine! Heather has been outstanding in her capacity to help train me as a handler to help my dog, be less reactive and much more successful in all of our day-to-day activities.

My anxious rescue pup is now a calm and happy dog who loves to learn new tricks and has even earn his Canine Good Citizen certification through AKC.
— Julie & Roscoe
Heather has an exceptional ability to read the dog, and adjust the training accordingly, so that there is clarity for the dog. She is able to succinctly explain what she sees in the dog’s behavior, and is patient with those of us who struggle to have better timing and body movement.

Thanks to Heather, my dogs are living fulfilled lives, loving the work they were bred to do, and are a pleasure to live with.
— Cheryl, Mia & Abu
[Heather’s] instructions and YouTube videos are exceptional. The instructions are well-written, presented in easily understood language, and clearly illustrated...

This is a Masters course in the canine process of communication perception...

Looking forward to our next class!
— Tony & Harry

Who is Coaching Best For?

  • Ideal for working on foundations with young and newly adopted dogs, and adapting training through adolescence.

  • We can work through the full Reactive Pup Program together (and more!) though a coaching program.

  • Learn crucial skills - a reliable recall, stays and leash skills for hiking, camping, crag dog days, van life and more.

  • Does your dog need brain challenges to stay satisfied? Let’s work their minds with new skills and teach them how to use their natural instincts constructively with play and search games.

  • Coaching to move beyond the basics to tackle complicated behavior problems with a Certified Behavior Consultant.

  • For people who need flexible scheduling. For teaching that fits your learning style and needs (neurodivergent learners welcome!). For people looking for a supportive environment, with an understanding of the human’s emotions as well as our dogs, especially navigating difficult behavior problems.

Who am I?

Hi, I’m Heather!

I’m a Certified Pet Dog Trainer and Certified Behavior Consultant Canine.

But I work with dogs and people far beyond the textbook.

I’ve traveled North America backpacking, climbing, hiking, and seeking out alpine lakes with my dogs. I’ve competed across the US at the national level and in Europe in IGP (Schuztund, a dog sport comprised of obedience, protection, and tracking phases).

But most of all, I strive to create a fulfilling life for my dogs and myself. We work through behavior problems, funny personality quirks, and individual preferences together. I currently live and travel with two high-drive Dutch Shepherds, Tango and Archer. You’ll also see them as neutral dogs for helping teach reactive dogs, and on the couch - upside down and snoring.

BS Environmental Sci and Policy, Minor in Wildlife and Society and GIS from the University of Maryland * Trish King’s Academy of Dog Behavior * Certified Pet Dog Trainer, Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) * Certified Behavior Consultant Canine (CBCC) * 10+ years of professional experience * 20 years in fostering/rescue

I believe that behavior can ALWAYS improve. And sometimes just a few lessons isn’t enough to get your pup to their potential. There’s a better way for us to connect, train and learn. While there is a great time and a place for group classes, or just a couple of private training sessions, I've always felt like we could be doing things *better* than our traditional models of dog training.

When we work together, I’m here to help you learn the skills, concepts, mechanics, and what your dog is thinking! Like clock-work, about a year into training together clients say: “It’s clicked! We’re working together now!”

It takes time to absorb new information, and to also then be able to translate it to your dog. With consistency, seeing people get there with their dog and to really understand each other and be able to communicate and work through anything together in real-time, successfully - it’s what it’s all about.

I can’t give Heather enough praise for all her support and expertise. Heather is super patient and calm even in a tense situation.

In a short amount of time, I have seen a huge difference in my dog’s behavior. Not only has Heather taught my pup, but she has given me the tools I need to have a better relationship with him.

We have a high energy rescue pup and I don’t know where we’d be without Heather at Clear Mind Canine. She made training fun for the dog and us, and helped us build a strong bond. Our pup went from “wild” to the best dog ever, one who accompanies us on adventures and who charms pretty much everyone he meets.
